Earlier this year, la Viv, a new injectable filler was approved by the F.D.A. for use in correction of moderate to severe nasolabial folds (the creases that run from the nose to the corners of the lips).
Previously known as Isologen, la Viv is unique since it is produced from a patient’s own cells. This may be useful for patients seeking a more “natural” method to improve facial lines and wrinkles associated with aging. However, unlike most off-the-shelf fillers, la Viv requires a 3 to 5 month processing period and takes about 2 months to see the full effect. The results last at least 6 months and treatments can be repeated as needed without additional processing time. Since the product is made from human tissue, there may be less complications after injection, such as skin reactions or small lumps.
Dr. Gutowski gave a presentation on la Viv at the Hot Topics course which was associated with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting in 2011.
“The use of a patient’s cells to improve wrinkles and lines caused by aging is exciting and I expect we will see more similar innovations in the future. However, as with any other new technology, we need to see how long the results last before being able to say that this product is superior to our currently available fillers.”
