Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is a common plastic surgery procedures which can help improve back, neck, and shoulder pain, as well as self-esteem and allow for more physical activity. 

The cases and results below are based on Dr. Gutowski’s own patients. They are a representative sample of the hundreds of breast reduction cases that he personally performed. Results are based on each individual patient’s goals, expectations and body proportions.

Depending on each patients situation and symptoms, breast reduction may be covered by some insurance plans. Be sure to check your own individual policy for coverage and have your symptoms documented by your primary care physician. 

Most insurance plans may pay for a breast reduction if it is considered medically necessary, and not cosmetic. Typical requirements are:

  • Stable breast size
  • Symptoms such as:
  • Headaches
  • Pain in neck
  • Pain the breasts
  • Pain in shoulders
  • Pain in upper back
  • Painful back curvature
  • Pain/discomfort/ulceration from bra straps cutting into shoulders
  • Photo documentation of large breasts (done during your consultation)

Your insurance company may also require physician documented pain symptoms despite at least a 3-month treatment including:

  • Physician documented pain symptoms despite at least a 3-month treatment of:
  • Analgesic/non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Physical therapy/exercises/posturing maneuvers
  • Supportive devices such as proper bra support with wide bra straps

For women over 40 years of age or older, a mammogram a mammogram may be needed within one year of the planned breast reduction surgery.

During your consultation, Dr. Gutowski will estimate how much breast tissue will need to be removed so that insurance will consider covering the procedure. Some insurance companies require at least 500 grams to be removed (just over one pound) from each breast, while others use a chart, based on your height and weight, to determine the amount.

There are many different techniques used in breast reduction and Dr. Gutowski will select the one best suited for each individual patient.
