The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is monitoring the situation in Europe surrounding a specific brand of silicone gel breast implants manufactured by Poly Implant Prothese, also know as PIP. These implants have been associated with problems related to the quality of the silicone used and high rates of implant rupture.
The ASPS has determined that to the best of its knowledge, PIP silicone gel implants were not approved for use in the United States. Therefore, American women who had implants placed in the United States should not be concerned about being affected by the PIP implant recall.
