It may seem like a good idea – get your tummy tightened at the same time as a planned delivery by Cesarean section. But in this case, is combining two surgical procedures, called a “two-fer” by some, the right choice for you?
Although it may seem logical to have a tummy tuck during a C-section, and skip having to come back later for the cosmetic procedure, a new study confirms that it not the way to get a good result.
After repeated pregnancies, the abdominal wall becomes lax and the skin develops stretch marks, For many women, a tummy tuck offers an excellent improvement in these pregnancy related changes. In a study of 50 women who underwent a tummy tuck immediately after a C-section, the results were disappointing. There were more complication, such as infections and healing problems, than compared to a group of women who had just a tummy tuck done. Also, the final results were not good with many patients still having loose skin, poor waist definition and bulges. Based on these finding, the authors do not recommend performing a tummy tuck at the same time as a C-section.
While a combined procedure may seem more convenient for a busy mom, the risk of complications may be higher and the results may be worse than those achieved by postponing the tummy tuck for 6 to 12 months after delivery.
